Sarasota Farmers Market Honors Veterans with Veterans Appreciation Day

SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 17, 2013) – The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market is hosting Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 19 as part of the Legacy of Valor, a campaign created by The Patterson Foundation to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families.

The Downtown Market’s salute to Veterans will be a day filled with festivities beginning at 9 am and concluding at 1 pm. The event will feature a large tent with 10 non-profits that have missions geared toward helping veterans. There will also be a 17-piece Jazz band as well as a full schedule of events featuring local military organization’s, such as Sarasota Military Academy.

“The Sarasota Farmers Market is honored to take part in the Legacy of Valor campaign,” said Market Manager Phil Pagano. “The Veterans Appreciation Day event is meant to bring together local non-profits to help assist and make veterans aware of different organizations in the community that provide services to them. The entertainment we have put together is meant to provide a festive atmosphere to underscore that this really is meant as a day to celebrate the past and future contributions of veterans to our country.”

Legacy of Valor highlights a series of community-driven partnerships to create a tapestry of events that educate and focus the community toward honoring veterans and their families, inspiring patriotism and passing freedom on to others.

Market Profile: Red House Design Studio

451

Green design is making its mark in our industry and we are jumping on board to make sure it is not just a passing trend. And what better place to do this, than at the Sarasota Farmer’s Market?
With our background in construction and education in design, we’ve seen how much construction hardwood and unwanted furniture is labeled trash and thrown away. We’ve seen piece after piece with the “Made in China” label on its underside. We thought it was time to bring it home, leading us to create Red House Design Studio, a place where we can come together and share what we love!
With a lot of imagination and a little sweat, we can give used or tossed out hardwoods a new life.
We provide a range of services including custom artwork and furniture, with a focus on eco-friendly materials and finishes, like reclaimed barnwood, organic milk paint, and raw tung oil.
So why the name Red House? At a crossroads and under the guidance of Jimi Hendrix, it became the person symbol of our future success and happiness, so “Excuse us while we kiss the sky.”

Maggie’s Seafood, See Them Soon

tn

Maggie’s Seafood has been apart of the Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market for the past 17 years. When they first started selling seafood at the Market it only ran from 1st Street to Main Street on Lemon Avenue, and it was packed with 20 or so vendors, on the courtyard and in the street, there was no room for Maggie’s. So, their first booth wasn’t a booth at all, but a set up in the no-parking zone in front of the stop sign on Lemon. Space was so tight they had to place their coolers on the curb and stand on top of the storm drain in order to sell their shrimp and lobster tails. If they dropped something, it literally went down the drain.

“Maggie and I have been tremendously fortunate to be part of this market, and be able to grow our business along with it,” Maggie’s co-owner Gary Balch said. “We have met so many new people, and have become friends with so many customers through the years, it’s just been amazing. It’s been a wonderful experience which we wouldn’t trade for anything.”
A lot has changed since then, for both  Maggie’s Seafood and the Market. Instead of two or three hundred people coming to the market each week, we now have thousands. Instead of just selling shrimp from their friend’s boat, Maggie’s now offers the largest variety of fresh wild caught fish anywhere in the area. In addition to their freshly made crab cakes, salmon patties, soups chowders, fish spreads and more.

You can visit Maggie’s Seafood every Saturday morning at their booth outside of Brooks Brothers, at the intersection of Lemon and Main. Visit soon if you’re interested in jumbo shrimp, live Maine lobsters, or stone crabs as those items can go fast during the holiday season.
